Dissertation topic
The academic degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences was awarded by the decision of the Dissertation Council at Lomonosov Moscow State University on June 4, 1987 and diploma was issued on December 2, 1987 («Mathematical modeling of the distribution and migration of heavy metals in aquatic systems and their effects on aquatic organisms»). The academic degree of Doctor of Geographical Sciences was awarded by the decision of the Dissertation Council at the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute in the specialty 25.00.28 «Oceanology» dated June 11, 2004 («Development and application of compartmental models for the study of spatial characteristics of marine ecological systems»).

Mathematical modeling of the spatial and temporal variability of the seas and their catchment areas using modern information and satellite technologies.

Scientific activity and achievements
Berdnikov S.V. developed:
- a set of mathematical models of marine ecosystems, algorithms for decoding satellite images for constructing chlorophyll-A concentration fields in productive and turbid waters;
- geoinformation system of strategic planning for the development of the water management complex of the basin of the Lower Don and the Sea of Azov;
- a computer system for operational forecasting of natural hazards in the basin, coastal zone and water area of the Sea of Azov.
He is the author of more than 230 scientific papers, including 6 monographs, 4 Climate atlases and 7 copyright certificates for computer programs.
